Retired Brakeman

November 28, 2017

A friend asked me to talk with a man they had been sharing the Gospel with and hopefully lead him to receive Christ as his Savior. Jim had been a brakeman for the railroad for 30 years and now was helping his son farm, he had a son and six daughters. At 81 years of age he was facing cancer and uncertain as to what will be next.

Jim welcomed us and we visited for a while. I asked him how he was handling cancer. He said he did not want to go the route of chemo. “How would you explain to someone how to get to Heaven?” I asked him. “Pray and do the best you can,” he replied. “I would like to share with you how Jesus tells us how to get to Heaven.” “Jesus talked with a man named Nicodemus and he asked Jesus how to get to Heaven and Jesus’ answer is recorded in the Bible.”

“Yes,” he said he would like that. Reading from the Bible together I explained John 3:3-36 and John 1:12 to him and it was obvious he understood Jesus’ instruction to be “Born Again.

“Would you like to respond to Jesus. He died on the Cross with His arms wide open declaring that He loved you and now He is waiting for you to declare your love for Him and receive the Blood He shed on the Cross for payment of your sin and become a Son of God?” Jim’s prayer was a strong but simple, “I do, I do, I do.” Clearly his heart responded to The Lord Jesus Christ.

Will God heal me from my cancer?” he asked. “I don’t know,” I replied, “He can, death will come eventually to all of us but this I do know–there is no cancer in Heaven!” “I feel so much better,” he stated. “You explained a lot to me, I’m glad you came and shared this with me.” God had indeed opened the door for Jim to receive Christ.
